Carpentry and building in Amersham, done the traditional way.

Fitted wardrobes, kitchens, doors and floors. Garages, outbuildings and repairs to old and listed buildings. And the small jobs nobody else will come out for. I am Chris, and I have been at it for over 45 years.

Who you are dealing with

Chris Gayle. One carpenter, over 45 years.

I have been a carpenter and builder for over 45 years, and I still do it the traditional way: joints cut properly, old timber repaired rather than ripped out, and everything fitted to the room it is going in.

I am a sole trader based in Amersham, working across the Chilterns. You deal with me from the first phone call to the last offcut going in the van.

Over 45 years at it
Long enough to have seen most things that can go wrong with timber, and how to put them right.
The traditional way
Old timber repaired and matched rather than ripped out. Joints cut, not just screwed.
Local to Amersham
Based in Amersham, so Chesham, the Chalfonts and the Missendens are never far.
You deal with me
No office and no salesman. The person who prices the job is the person who does it.

How a job runs

From a phone call to a finished job

Four steps, and you know the price before the third one.

  1. 01

    Call or text

Tell me what the job is and roughly where you are. A photo on WhatsApp helps.

  2. 02

    I come and look

I measure up, look at what is there, and talk you through the options.

  3. 03

A clear price and a date

You get a price for the job and a start date. Nothing gets added without asking you first.

  4. 04

    The work, done tidily

Floors covered, swept up every day, and the offcuts gone when I finish.

What customers said

5.0 out of 5, from 21 Google reviews

Every review on Google is five stars. Here are three of them, word for word.

“Chris responded quickly to my job post for removing a fireback. He did an amazing job, he was professional with a great attention to detail. It’s difficult nowadays to find good trades people, but I would thoroughly recommend Chris and I would definitely get him to do other carpentry work for me. I was very happy with the end result.”

Questions

What people ask before booking

Do you take on small jobs?

Yes. A door that sticks, a shelf, a rotten sill, a shed to put up. Ring or text with what it is, and if you have a few, send the list and I will do them in one visit.

Can you fit a kitchen or wardrobes I have bought myself?

Yes. I fit kitchens and wardrobes from the big suppliers and local ones, and can build fitted furniture from scratch where nothing off the shelf will fit the space.

Do you work on listed and old buildings?

Yes, it is a big part of what I do. Old frames, floors, doors and windows repaired the traditional way, with new timber spliced in where the old has gone. If the work needs listed building consent, that needs to be in place before I start, and I can work to what your conservation officer agrees.

Can you build a garage, workshop or garden room?

Yes. Timber-framed, on a brick plinth or a concrete base, clad in weatherboard and roofed. Some outbuildings need planning permission or building regulations depending on size and where they sit; I will tell you when I come and look.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the job, the timber and what is there already. That is why I come and look before I price it. You get a clear price before anything starts.

What areas do you cover?

Amersham and the villages round it, Chesham, Little Chalfont, Chalfont St Giles and St Peter, Great Missenden, Prestwood, Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross, and across to Chorleywood and Rickmansworth. If you are further out, ring and ask.

Do you work weekends?

Yes. I am open Monday 7:30am to 7pm, Tuesday to Friday 8:30am to 7pm, Saturday 8:30am to 5pm and Sunday 2pm to 7pm.
