Amersham

Carpenter in Amersham, Old Town and on the Hill.

I live and work in Amersham, so most of my jobs are a few minutes away. From a sticking door on the Hill to a timber frame repair in the Old Town.

Amersham, Buckinghamshire

Two towns, and very different houses

The Old Town along the High Street is mostly listed: timber-framed and brick-fronted houses, some of them hundreds of years old. Nothing in them is square. They need old timber repaired rather than replaced, and fitted work scribed to walls and floors that have moved.

Amersham-on-the-Hill grew up round the station, so it is more Edwardian and 1930s houses. That means a lot of alcove shelving either side of the chimney breast, fitted wardrobes, original doors to ease and rehang, and garages and workshops at the end of long gardens.

Home ground. I am based in Amersham.

Questions

Carpentry in Amersham: what people ask

Do you work on listed houses in Amersham Old Town?

Yes. Old frames, doors, windows and floors repaired by hand, with new timber spliced in to match. If the work needs listed building consent, that needs to be in place first, and I can work to what the conservation officer agrees.

Can you build shelving into the alcoves either side of my chimney?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards underneath, or both, scribed to the walls so there are no gaps. Oak, plywood or painted, whichever suits the room.

Which parts of Amersham do you cover?

All of it, Old Town and the Hill, plus Chesham Bois, Little Chalfont, Coleshill, Hyde Heath and the Missendens.
