Building & restoration
Building and restoration in Amersham, done the traditional way.
Timber buildings put up properly, and old ones repaired rather than replaced. Over 45 years of carpentry, and old buildings are a big part of it.
The traditional way
Repair what is there before reaching for something new
An old frame that has stood for two hundred years usually only needs the rotten parts cut out and new timber spliced in. That keeps the building honest, and it is often cheaper than replacing it.
- Over 45 years at the trade
- Timber frames built and repaired
- Old timber matched, not replaced
- Working alongside your builder if you have one
- Planning and regs flagged up front
- Site left tidy
01 / Garages & outbuildings
Garages, workshops & outbuildings
A timber-framed outbuilding put up properly will outlast the house it sits next to. I build them the traditional way: a frame on a brick plinth, breather membrane, then weatherboard, with the doors and windows made to suit.
Garages, workshops, log stores and garden studios, and old ones repaired where the frame is still sound. If yours needs planning permission or building regulations, I will say so when I come and look.
- Timber-framed garages and workshops
- Frames on brick plinths
- Feather-edge and shiplap weatherboard
- Roof structures
- Ledged doors and window frames made up
- Repairs to old outbuildings

02 / Garden rooms & sheds
Garden rooms & sheds
A garden room is a small building, and it wants building like one: a level base, a treated frame, a roof that sheds water and a floor that will not bounce.
If you have bought a shed or summerhouse in kit form, I will put it up for you. Base checked first, then assembled square and fixed down, so the doors still shut in five years.
- Garden rooms and studios
- Timber frames on concrete bases
- Sheds and summerhouses assembled
- Floors, roofs and felting
- Doors and windows fitted
- Old sheds taken down

03 / Listed buildings
Listed buildings & restoration
A lot of the houses round Amersham and the Chalfonts are hundreds of years old, and plenty of them are listed. They need a carpenter who will cut out the rot and splice in new timber of the same kind, rather than rip it out and start again.
Frames, joists, floors, doors and windows repaired by hand, matched to what is there. If the work needs listed building consent, I can work to what your conservation officer agrees.
- Timber frame repairs
- Rotten timber cut out and spliced
- Doors and windows repaired
- Floors and joists
- Matching old mouldings
- Barns and outbuildings brought back

04 / Stud walls & fit-outs
Stud walls, partitions & fit-outs
A stud wall turns one big bedroom into two, or makes room for an en-suite. I frame it, insulate it, board it and hang the door, ready for the plasterer.
The same for commercial units: offices, stores and workshops partitioned out inside a steel-framed building, with the doors and frames in.
- Timber stud walls
- Sound insulation
- New door openings
- Boxing in pipes and steels
- Office and unit partitions
- Ready for plasterers
