Carpentry & joinery

Carpentry in Amersham. Built to fit, and built to last.

Inside the house, from a single door to a room full of fitted furniture. Here is each kind of carpentry I take on, and what goes into it.

How I work

Your house is still your house while I am in it

Carpentry makes dust and offcuts. The difference is what happens around it: floors covered, cutting done outside where I can, and the room swept at the end of every day.

  • I come and look before I price it
  • Floors and furniture covered
  • Cutting done outside where possible
  • Swept up at the end of each day
  • Offcuts and rubbish taken away
  • You deal with me from start to finish

01 / Fitted wardrobes & shelving

Fitted wardrobes & built-in storage

Old houses are never square, and off-the-shelf furniture never quite fits them. Built-in work does. I scribe it to the walls and the ceiling, so there are no gaps down the side and no dead space on top.

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes, oak bookcases either side of a chimney breast, plywood shelving and lift-up hatches into the eaves of a loft room. Painted, oiled or left ready for your decorator.

  • Fitted wardrobes, floor to ceiling
  • Alcove shelving and cupboards
  • Eaves and under-stair storage
  • Scribed to walls that are not straight
  • Oak, birch ply or painted MDF
  • Hinges, runners and handles fitted

02 / Kitchens & utility rooms

Kitchens & utility rooms

Kitchen fitting is mostly carpentry: carcasses level and fixed, doors lined up, worktops cut and jointed, end panels and plinths scribed to the floor. I fit kitchens you have bought yourself, from the big sheds or a local supplier.

Utility rooms and boiler cupboards too. A boiler hidden behind flush doors, a worktop over the washing machine and somewhere to put the ironing board.

  • Units fitted and levelled
  • Wooden and laminate worktops
  • Doors, drawers and handles lined up
  • Plinths, end panels and fillers
  • Boiler and meter cupboards
  • Small kitchens and kitchenettes

03 / Doors & frames

Doors, frames & pocket doors

A door that closes with a quiet click and an even gap all round takes longer to hang than most people think. I hang new doors, trim and rehang old ones that stick, and fit the locks, latches and handles.

Pocket doors that slide into the wall where a swinging door would get in the way. And ledged and braced doors, made up for garages, barns and outbuildings.

  • Internal doors hung
  • Sticking doors eased and rehung
  • Pocket and sliding doors
  • Door linings and architraves
  • Ledged and braced doors made up
  • Locks, latches and handles

04 / Floors & panelling

Floors, skirting & panelling

The finishing carpentry is what people notice in a room, even when they do not know they are noticing it. Mitres that close, skirting that sits tight to the floor, a herringbone pattern that runs true from one wall to the other.

Wooden and engineered floors laid, skirting and architrave replaced, and panelling put up: dado rails, picture-frame mouldings and full-height panelled walls.

  • Herringbone and engineered floors
  • Skirting boards and architraves
  • Wall panelling and dado rails
  • Floorboards lifted and relaid
  • Stair treads and handrails
  • Window boards
